Big Ballin Wit The Remix

40

E-40 f/ C-Dog & B-Legit – “Big Ballin’ (Remix)

from Big Ballin’ (Remix) 12″ (White Label, 1999)

The Click – “Hurricane (Remix)

from Hurricane 12″ (Jive, 1997)

The internet is filled with meticulously cataloged collections of New York rap remixes, but finding specific remixes of gangsta or “regional” rap is still a little more difficult. But let’s be real, the classic remix was always the primary domain of true school adherents. With a few exceptions, there just aren’t as many legendary remixes coming from outside the NYC purism circle. Perhaps this is because DJ culture always seemed more utilitarian than prestigious in other scenes so there wasn’t as much demand for fresh remixes. Or maybe there was just less of a push to rework singles to different markets. I don’t know. Whatever the case, there are certainly some cool remixes that get overlooked because nobody is looking for remixes in these corners of the hip hop world.

And really there’s no more comfortable corner than the one occupied by Vallejo’s Hillside Hillbillies The Click. On the “Big Ballin’ Remix” the flip both the beat and the lyrics. B-Le almost steals the show with his “make your lungs retire” weed carrier boasts. I have no idea who C-Dog is or why he ended up on an E-40 record, but he is from Dallas and holds his own. The “Hurricane” remix doesn’t do a whole lot, just amends a fatter bassline to the classic original. (more…)

Video: D-Lo f/ E-40 – “No Hoe Remix”

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Video’s a little late, but it’s a welcome reminder. It’s great how the clean edit pushes D-Lo’s hook even further into the realm of gibberish.

Video: E-40 – “The Server”

This was unexpected.

SCRAPBOOK SATURDAYS: Murder Dog on Calvin T

Calvin T – “Money Maker

from $ Maker 12″ (White Label, 198?)

We’re back again with another local legend. Richmond’s Calvin T gained rep alongside his rhyme partner Magic Mike. The duo were the closest peers to Too Short as far as underground, out-the-trunk Bay Area rappers in the early to mid 80s, but drugs and prison time prevented them from ever achieving the same long term national successes that Short has seen. Still most Bay of the rappers that followed acknowledge their impact and you can definitely hear their influence, particularly on Vallejo artists like E-40 and Mac Dre. This 1997 Murder Dog interview tells his story. (more…)
