Mr. Rhymes Goes To Washington

Backyard Band f/ Busta Rhymes – “Woo Hah

from @ Flavors 10/5/96 (PA Tape, 1996)

I really do love it when the New York Times and other such publications refer to Busta Rhymes as “Mr. Rhymes.”

Back when we did the Scarface at the go-go post, a few readers requested that it become a regular series. Well, here it goes. Busta and some semblance of Flipmode (probably just Spliff Star) rocking with BYB shortly after the release of The Coming. His energy translates pretty well even if his mic seems a little too low.

The Coming was a pretty great rap album, iirc. Maybe it requires a revisitation?

By all means, please do. I was just playing this last week thanks to the “Tight” remix, I was reminded how much I love Lord Have Mercy.

The Coming was a fine debut, but the Busta shit i play the most nowadays are his ridiculously hard Neptunes produced joints from ‘01 – ‘03 like As I Come Back and Call The Ambulance + the remix with Rah and M.O.P.

    THERE’S A REMIX??!!

  6. MF Says:

Certainly is. The remix got more radio play than the original from what i remember.

In the record shop I work in I have to spend 30 seconds every week moving Busta from R to B. Rockists. They don’t know.

    Coming is delightful.

However, it’s all style and aesthetics: the visuals, the time capsule beats, the dated R&B hook on “It’s a Party.”

But LYRICALLY? Mostly style and lines stemming from one phrase: “Busta hit you with that shit that make you…”

Maybe this busta with a live band ish goes over better when you’re a part of the live audience but these recordings are just stale. Pretty damn boring when you compare Woo-Hah here to the original recording and the remix.

Thanks for these. I miss DC in the mid-nineties.

Why would you even question that The Coming is great?

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the first 3 Bustas are all really, really dope, but he still never quite made the album he could have.
