Mixtapes Of Note: Pill, Freeway, Kingpen Slim

Pill & DJ Skee – 4075: The Refill [NODJ] (Mixtape, 2009)
Freeway & Don Cannon – The Beat Made Me Do It [NODJ] (Mixtape, 2009)
Kingpen Slim & DJ J. Buttah – The Capital City Kingpen (Mixtape, 2009)
Forgive the silence, my internet is touch and go. Here are three recent tapes from Philadelphia Freezer, Atlanta’s Pill and DC’s own Kingpen Slim. I’ve yet to see the NODJ of the Free tape in the bogs but Jake One posted it to Soulstrut.

Freeway tape is perfect.

Also, the Mac Boney tape is surprisingly sick. Best thing to come out of the Grand Hustle camp in, uh… I don’t know when the last thing I liked was.

I haven’t heard all of the Freeway tape but I didn’t like the 3/5 or so I heard. Lazy soul samples not good enough to make the album, and as for Freeway… I mean, it’s like all he raps about anymore are the imaginary groupies he has, kinda depriving his shit of the whole, you know, emotional dimension that made him fun to listen to. All that remains interesting about him is the really random emphasis he puts on certain words, but even that has ceased to sound like his weird way of showing how much he really cares about what he’s saying and more like a mildly amusing stylistic tic.

I was really disappointed in how musically bland the Freeway tape is.

Damn y’all are crazy. Freeway fits so good on that “true-school minimalism” or whatever you wanna call it. Jake One didnt even add drums to any of the songs on the record and it sounds all the better for it!

I wouldn’t mind the beats so much if I didn’t recognize so many of the samples from other rap songs where they were flipped better. The sample from ‘feet off the ground’ is flipped better on Ball and G’s Pimps, ‘Playa Named Attitude’ has a better beat than ‘Attitudes’ etc.

He did on Free At Last but I don’t feel he put much effort into this tape. And really the best songs are the few Jake One didn’t produce (especially the one with Beans).

Why is the tracklisting for the NoDJ version of the Free tape completely different from the tracklist for the DJ version I’m finding online? Incidentally, I’m liking it – but I’m a sucker for soul beats. I’m the dork they re-tread that sound for.
