New Rap Music

I’m home sick today (differentiated from my “home healthy” days only by how guilty I feel about procrastination) and decided to post some new rap music.
Pill – “Back Outside“
from 4180: The Prescription
Grind Time Rap Gang affiliate (Gangsta) Pill goes in over some Issac Hayesish moody loops. (via Blvd St.)
Playboy Tre – “Bleachers“
from Liquor Store Mascot (Coming Soon)
As B.O.B. moves further into space rapping and not-rapping territory his vastly underrated homie and hypeman Playboy Tre keeps getting closer and closer to RAP RAP purism. “Bleachers” breathes off palm to the lunch table simplicity.
Mack Maine – “Vitamin C“
from This Is Just A Mixtape (Mixtape, 2009)
“Vitamin C” is the only track on this new tape that sounds like the old Mack Maine. Or, at least, what I imagined the old Mack Maine to sound like. When the Young Money second stringer started getting attention he was being positioned as the backpacker of the camp. But ever since one time Wayne Mini Me Curren$y split, Maine has been swapped in as Weezy’s anonymous foil. And now Curren$y is making lyrically lyrical lyricist tapes (poorly). The point being that Maine is probably better suited for this sort of rambling boom bap battle rap than going all autotune “maack maaine on dem hoes.”
Myka 9 f/ Busdriver – “Chopper“
from 1969 (Fake Four, 2009)
Like he did with “Viles,” Mikah throws his old fans a single life preserver in the form of a hardcore chop shop fast rap track in the sea of hippie dippie love the universe singing that is his new album.
Daddy-O – “Dorm Room“
Not to be confused with the Stetsasonic frontman, resident Philly eccentric Daddy-O has been rapping weird in a city where weird rapping doesn’t usually happen. No mp3 on this (yet?) but here’s a youtube bonus beat of dude freestyling over what sounds like a damn Maestro Rhythm King. (via Emynd)
Attitude & Jackie Chain – “Money“
Not sure who produced this, but I am going to assume it was the Block Beataz, given their penchant for unexpected sample sources. This was touched on briefly over in the G-Side comment section (now featuring DIPLO) but one of the interesting things about that production team is their willingness to dig for untouched beats. It seems most current day sample based music is either built on nostalgic UBB flips or just grasping for cool points with hipster signifiers (Daft Punk, MIA). Sure, the Dilla/Primo progeny are still digging for whatever garbage they can get their hands on (these are the dudes who bought all the ten cent Mantovani records at my old work) but they usually render their sources unrecognizable by way of the chop. Besides they only rock vinyl, son! There is 20 years of basically untouched and obscure music sitting in CD cutout bins and Soulseek folders – failed folk pop songstresses, crappy trance, rock rap, whatever. All that is ripe for the picking. Alabama must have some great pawn shops. (via Blvd St.)
Jay Electronica & Che Grand – “Hagler“
Why are Jay Elect’s songs always so short? Write a hook or something, man. Produced by Denaun Porter, who is a beast.
Fabo – “Spaceship Man“
There’s a simple formula for Fabo’s style: ODB x Kilo. Here he raps about spaceships. He should rap more frequently. (via So Many Shrimp)

These songs are all good, but I would quibble with this:
“Vitamin C” is the only track on this new tape that sounds like the old Mack Maine…The point being that Maine is probably better suited for this sort of rambling boom bap battle rap than going all autotune “maack maaine on dem hoes.”
I only heard him use autotune about twice on the tape, and it seemed to me like a lot of it sounded like the old Mack Maine, or at least Mack Maine circa “I do Pushups On My Money”… like Man Cry or Payin Homage, even Girl You Nasty (great Zoe verse) is a reasonably backpacker take on the subject matter. Not that any of it’s that good, of course.

You might be right Tray, but the production mostly was generic and rapping boring so not classic maine to me.

Great bunch of tracks.
Btw, you know that ridiculous verse on ‘Open Shop’ off of Weezy’s ‘The Drought is Over 5′ ? The one where dude goes on about stabbing you with the antlers of an antelope, drinking tap water, chopping bags & scraping plates just to cop bathing apes? Is that really Mack Maine?? Coz people told me it was, and since that verse was easily one of my faves from last year, I checked out his mixtapes. But I was pretty disappointed. So yeah, is that really Mack Maine? Coz that verse is just a little too great to be a random, once in a lifetime, lucky shot.
I wanna hear more from whoever did that ‘living like its 88′ verse.

Oh, I agree that it was generic and boring. The only song I really liked on the tape was the Soulja Slim. I need to get up on him.
